Printing the Map

When you use the Print tool to print your map, the printed version of your map does not look exactly like what you see in the browser window. The map extent is the same, but the toolbar is not included and the overview map appears above the legend.

When you click the Print button a text box appears for you to type a title for your map. The default title is "ArcIMS HTML Viewer Map".

  1. Click Print on the toolbar.
  2. The print options appear in a new browser window on top of the map viewer.
  3. Type a title for the printed map.
  4. Select the map layout, either landscape (larger image) or portrait.
  5. Select the desired page size. Only 8.5 x 11 and 11 x 17 are available do to file size restrictions.
  6. Select the desired image resolution. This will be a printed resolution and may not display correctly on your monitor.
  7. Click Create Print Page.
  8. A new browser window opens containing a printable version of your map.
  9. Click File then click Print.
  10. The Print dialog box appears.
  11. Check the print settings and make any necessary changes (i.e. change the layout and size of the print out to match the page you generated).
  12. Click OK.
  13. The map prints, complete with a title, legend, overview map, scale bar, and North arrow.

Tip: Disable Your Pop-up Blocker

The map viewer makes use of various pop-up windows that are blocked differently based on the type of program you are using. For instance, the pop-up blocker included with Service Pack 2 of the Windows XP operating system will allow the majority of the pop-up windows to open. However, the new window that is opened when you click on the Generate Print Page button, will always be blocked if the pop-up blocker is turned on, but not correctly configured for the website. This will result in a continuous Retrieving Map message on the map viewer.
